I agree. Edit re: below: Successful language learning is a multi-year project requiring multiple resources. Explicit grammar doesn’t hurt either. Please please everyone understand the importance of input. The usefulness of SR’s memorization and textbooks will very quickly fall off (as will your attention span). You need to be inputting with audio, tv, movies, music, and books for the vast majority of your time. It’s surprisingly effortless too. Suddenly I noticed that I read fast enough to Good Teachercorn Like A Normal Teacher But More Awesome Shirt misread a word, realize that, and automatically think of which word it should be. I also catch spelling mistakes now. Not all of course, but I didn’t actively spend time learning these words, I just read and watch TV.

I begin to think in Spanish during the day, dream some, and remember words in Spanish that I can’t recall in the languages I’m actually fluent in at that moment. The brain seems to be making a niche for the new language, where it’s no longer dependent on direct translation. Totally true. To Good Teachercorn Like A Normal Teacher But More Awesome Shirt speak a language is an art, and using too much memorization and textbook learning can make it robotic and too mathematical. Plus I just binged all of Avatar dubbed in Spanish because it was addictive, “studying” can be torture, and is really really difficult to maintain.
